Making A Hexagon Shaped Pottery Bowl

This is the first time i have made a bowl this way, I did have the idea for a while from something I saw that was similar on the great pottery throw down (how good is that show?!)

Pushing the clay out from the inside can be something you tend to forget at times, you get into this thought pattern that all the shaping is done from the inside and outside simultaneously, but that couldn’t be further from the truth

Few Tips On How I Made This:

Cut away from the clay body in one continuous and straight motion. Don’t go stopping half way or try to change directions midway, you can do this is you have some experience but if its your fist time trying then take it a step at a time

Pay special attention to the thickness of the clay. You want the clay walls to be a little thicker than usual, as you’ll be cutting into it later on if you make the walls too thin and the base to thick you risk the pot cracking, so try and have the base and the walls and even thickness when you have a finished product.

Also have fun when you are making shapes like this you don’t necessarily have to make a hexagon shape like I have in this video. You can make whatever shape or cut away whatever piece you want on your pot as long as you keep in mind your form and how the piece will dry, you should not have a problem and have fun!!

When it gets into the leather hard stage, this is a good time to trim the base and clean up the outside walls, making sure not to use a rough sponge but a smooth sponge, so you do not remove too much clay from the outside and lose the effect that this gives you

Once again hope you enjoyed this post and as always Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳

We will be back tomorrow with some more tips and ideas ❤️
