A Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Step 1: Prepare the Body
Start by gathering your cut-out pieces for the vase’s body, and draw in some texture lines on the main body of clay.
For more on preparing your clay such as kneading and rolling out your clay check out our previous blog post “How to make a pottery tumbler part 1-2“.
Step 2: Score and Slip
Flip the clay pieces and score both sides to be joined, then apply slip. This step ensures a strong bond when bringing the pieces together.
Step 3: Shape the Body
Take a piece of dowel and use it to bring the body pieces together. Use your finger to compress the seam running down the front of the vase, creating a textured appearance.
Step 4: Attach to a Base
Place the vase body onto a clay base. Roll a coil of clay and attach it to the base, reinforcing the joint. Use a wooden tool to compress the clay and then smooth it with a damp foam mud tool.
Step 5: Add the Shoulder
Attach the shoulder piece, ensuring it has a hole cut out for the vase’s design. Don’t forget to score and apply slip then gently pinching the seam. Use a sponge to clean up any excess clay.
Step 6: Shape the Neck
Take a strip of clay and shape it into the desired neck form for your vase. Score and apply slip, then attach the neck securely to the shoulder.
Step 7: Refine the Join
Use your finger to smooth the inside seam and run around the outside for a neat finish. Further, compress join with a wooden tool and finish with a dampened finger.
Step 8: Add the Final Piece
Lastly, place another piece of clay with a hole cut out onto the vase, following the same score and slip process. Use a wooden tool to compress the inside seam and smooth the outside with a damp sponge.
