Look at what we have used for a Mould

You will need a wooden block to use as a mould, some paper, and a slab of compressed clay. Once you’ve obtained these materials, proceed with the following steps:

1. Shape your Design: Cut out your desired vase shape from your compressed slab of clay.

For more on preparing your clay such as kneading your clay and rolling it out, check out our previous blog post “How to make a pottery tumbler part 1-2

2. Clay Application: Start by covering wooden block with paper, then drape your clay over the wooden block, ensuring it covers the entire shape.

3. Secure the Joint: Don’t forget to score and slip the joint where the clay meets to ensure a strong bond.

4. Texture the Front: Apply texture to the front of the vase. This texturing will provide an opportunity for the glaze to exhibit colour variation and assist in creating a solid connection.

5. Smoothing: Employ a moistened finger to smooth all the areas where the clay joins together, ensuring a seamless appearance.

6. Create the Base: Place your vase body on a spare piece of clay, allowing an extra 1 cm of material. Then, cut out the base of the vase.

7. Secure the Base: Score and slip both the base and the bottom of the vase body.

8. Attach the Base: Position the vase body over the base, ensuring it is cantered. Use a wooden tool to compress the clay base to the body securely.

9. Final Touches: To complete your vase, remove the wooden block and the paper. Use a damp sponge to carefully go around and tidy up all areas of your newly crafted vase.

10. Bisque fire your vase, then your bisqueware piece should be glazed in your favourite glaze, or if available apply a variegating glaze and glaze fire.

11. We hope your piece turns out beautiful.
