Craft a Pottery Double Ended Vase: A Step-by-Step Guide.
To create this charming double-ended vase, follow these simple steps:
1. Begin by using a template to cut a circle from a piece of clay.
For more on preparing your clay, such as rolling out your clay, compressing your clay and wedging, check out our previous blog post “How to make a pottery tumbler part 1-2“
2. Place the cut-out clay circle onto a mould, ensuring it is even all the way around.
3. Compress the clay firmly onto the moulds surface and trim any excess clay from the bottom.
4. Leave the clay on the mould to dry.
5. Once the clay has dried enough, gently remove it from the mould, taking care not to damage the shape.
6. Clean up the inside and the edges of the vase, being cautious not to make it too wet, as it may collapse.
7. Gradually bring together the two points in the middle of the vase, scoring, slipping, and pressing them firmly to join.
8. Rub the scored areas together to secure the connection.
9. Apply decoration, first, cut out some leaves and roll some small Balls of clay for gum nuts.
10. Score and slip the desired location for attaching a leaf to the vase.
11. Give the gum nuts a circular pattern using the end of a pen or a similar tool. Then attach them to the vase by scoring and using slip.
12. Allow the vase to dry completely before proceeding with the first bisque firing and then the glaze firing.
Following these steps, you’ll have a beautifully crafted double-ended vase ready to display or use for your favourite flowers. Remember to take your time and enjoy the creative process!
Happy potting! 🤗
