Let’s Make A Spontaneous Vibrant Flower Vase!

From a lump of clay to a completely glazed vase. Here are some tips to how you can throw your own!!!

1. Prepare Your Clay: Start by wedging your clay thoroughly to remove any air bubbles. This ensures a consistent texture that’s perfect for throwing.

2. Centre the Clay and Create an Opening: Place your clay on the wheel and centre it, keeping your elbows close to your body for stability. Open the centre of the clay, forming the foundation for pulling up the walls.

3. Raise and Shape the Vase Walls: Gradually pull up the walls of the vase, shaping it to your desired height and curve from the inside. Be careful not to thin the walls too much.

4. Smooth the Outer Wall: Use a rib or sponge to carefully smooth and refine the outer wall, ensuring it’s even and free of imperfections.

5. Add a Wiggle Pattern: Use a large-faced pottery shaping tool or a popsicle stick to add an eye-catching wiggle pattern to the vase. This decorative touch will make your piece truly unique.

6. Slow Dry and Bisque Fire: Place the vase under a plastic bag and let it dry slowly for about two weeks to minimise the risk of cracks. Then, fire the vase to bisque temperature in your kiln to strengthen it for glazing.

7. Glazing: Finish your vase with your favourite glaze. Experiment with techniques like slip trailing, dipping, or pouring to achieve different effects.

Once complete, you’ll have a beautiful piece of art to cherish or gift to a loved one. Enjoy the process and happy potting!
