John Carey Downton (Australia 1939-)

John Carey Downton born in Sydney in 1939, John studied at the Royal Art society of NSW under Kenneth Green, Allan Hanson, Arthur Murch, and George Duncan.


He also spent many years Plein Air painting with master artist Leonard Long.

He has exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne and provincial centres since 1974, and has studied and worked in the USA, China and the Phillipines.

In 1982, John was made a Fellow of the Bega Art Society, in 2000 of the Royal Art Society and in 2004 of the Australian Society of Marine Artists.

He was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to visual arts as a landscape and maritime artist and for services to the community in 2017.
