I THREW 4KGS OF CLAY!! 👀🥳
This was just too good to cut down to 15 or so seconds so I thought I’d make a long form video
As a potter, throwing a large amount of clay on a wheel head can be both thrilling and exciting. It’s very much a test of skill and how far you have come in your throwing technique.
The sheer weight of the clay requires strength and focus, as any mistakes made during the centring process can have a significant impact on the finished piece.
To begin, it is essential to take your time and centre the clay slowly and meticulously.
Making sure to bring the clay to the exact centre of the wheel head, ensuring that it is even and well-balanced. This is a critical step in the throwing process, as it sets the foundation for the creation of a symmetrical and well-formed piece.
Once the clay is centred, you can begin to pull the wall up slowly and steadily. A process that must not be rushed, as doing so can lead to mistakes and lets be frank, there’s a lot of clay on the line here 😂
Focus on maintaining a steady pace and using your hands to shape the clay into the desired form.
As you continue to work on the piece, take the time to think about the final shape but also what is easy for you to handle later, whether thats trimming the base or even moving it around the studio before bisque, the form of the piece should also be strong enough, we are talking about a large amount of clay.
Also make use your walls are even, this is VERY important, this pot is going to hold a huge amount of water if you leave a area of the wall too thick, quality of the throw is very important.
Ultimately, throwing a large amount of clay requires skill, patience, time and It is a process that cannot be rushed, but rather approached with care and attention to detail.
I hope you enjoyed this long form video as much as i enjoyed throwing it, maybe i should do another one soon? What do you think?
Anyway happy throwing guys! 😊
