How to Hand Build a Pottery Round Vase: A Step-by-Step Guide.
If you’re eager to craft your own small round vase without using a pottery wheel, follow this step-by-step guide:
1. Start by cutting out two circular pieces of clay. These will form the two halves of your vase. Also, ensure you have a rubber ball on hand to use as a mould.

2. Place one of the clay circles onto the rubber ball, gently pressing it down and smoothing it with a rubber kidney tool. Be meticulous in this step to ensure a proper fit.
3. Carefully lift the clay from the rubber ball mould once it’s firm enough to hold its shape. Handle it gently to avoid distortion.
4. Repeat step 2-3 for second circle.
5. To refine the vase’s appearance, use a pottery knife to trim the edges of both clay halves.
6. Create a rough surface on rim of each clay half. This will help the pieces adhere to each other. Apply slip and score marks on both sides.
7. Carefully bring the two halves together, ensuring they fit snugly. Squeeze them together and use a tool to firmly scrape both sides. Repeat this process several times until they’re securely joined.
8. Run your tool around the joined seam to smooth it out, ensuring there are no visible seams.
9. Place a small cookie cutter on the top of your vase and mark where you want the hole to be. Then, carefully cut out the hole and tidy up its edges.
10. Gently lift the rim of the vase to form a neck and run a tool around the inside where the two halves are joined to blend them seamlessly.
11. Enhance the appearance of your vase by using carving tools to add texture and patterns to its surface.
12. If you wish, cut out small clay leaves, gum nuts, or other decorative elements. Score and slip these onto the vase’s surface.
13. Ensure that all scored and slipped parts are securely attached.
Happy potting! 🤗
