How to Hand Build and Decorate with Texture a Bowl: A Step-by-Step Guide.
Step 1: Begin by working with a compressed slab of clay. Cut out a circular shape from the slab. Carefully place this circle onto a plaster mould and gently press it down to conform to the mould’s shape.
Step 2: Using a rubber tool, create a small foot ring on the bottom of the bowl. This will provide stability and a decorative element to your bowl. Allow the clay to dry slightly, so it becomes easier to handle.
Step 3: Once the clay has dried to a suitable consistency, carefully remove the bowl from the plaster mould. Take care not to warp the shape during this process.
Step 4: With the bowl removed from the mould, clean up the inside and edges of the bowl to achieve a smooth and refined finish. Use a chammy to gently go around the edge for a polished look. Allow the clay to dry a bit more.
Step 5: Place the bowl back on the mould. Use a wooden comb to create your desired texture on the top surface of the bowl. Brush off any excess clay to reveal the textured pattern.
Step 6: Using a knife, carefully cut a small section from the bowl’s rim. Wet the cut edges slightly and clean them up to ensure a neat finish.
Step 7: Take the cut-out section and coil it gently. Reattach this coiled piece to the bowl. Ensure a secure and seamless join. As always, clean up any excess clay.
Step 8: Once you’re satisfied with the texture and design of your bowl, give it a final check for any imperfections. Clean and refine any areas that need attention.
Step 9: Allow it to dry thoroughly before bisque firing it in a kiln according to your clay’s specific firing instructions. Once fired, you can further customise it with glazes or leave it with its natural, textured finish and fire once more to temp.
Happy potting! 🤗
