How to make a swirled design vase

Got a twist decorated vase today! This is the second vase I’ve done with this design, my goal is to create a texture that will play well with the glazes we have, Im thinking our stonewash blue should look pretty good on it but we will see in a month

We have a big weekend ahead, I’m hopping to get some more exciting videos and pots made over the next few days to show you all, plus its a good excuse to use up the last bit on mahogany clay we have left

I’ll add a few tips below on how i made this and some pointers for making your own! 🤗

1. I keep saying this but the most important thing is to make sure your clay is thoroughly wedged, this particular one had a air bubble that got missed, it was only when I started conning on the wheel head that I noticed it had a air bubble. I spent a good 5 minuets on it trying to get the air bubble out when conning, as this sometimes brings the bubble to the surface, but unfortunately this did not work. My best option was to bring the walls up and allow the bubble to come to the top part of the pot and then cut it off.

2. Buy yourself a metal rib, as much as the rubber ones are easy to use and are easily assessable, a good strong metal rib allows you to push up against a good solid surface and allow you to get a nice consistent thickness to the wall. Don’t ever push the rib into the walls. Always push the walls into the rib from the inside out

3. You can use any tool for adding a twist design to a vase or pot but I find a good soft edged tool works the best. The twist design cannot be finished until its past the leather hard stage due to the designs fragile nature and can easily be wiped away with a few sponge strokes. Use a soft edged tool to eliminate any harsh tool marks and save too much finishing afterwards

Once again hope you enjoyed this post and as always Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳

We will be back tomorrow with some more tips and ideas ❤️
