How To Make A Retro Themed Moon Vase

Crafting a Nostalgic Moon Vase: A Step-by-Step Guide

We’ll explore how to create a retro-themed moon vase.

Step 1: Start by cutting out two pieces of clay. Lay the first piece over a suitable mould to shape it into the desired form. A plaster mould works well for this purpose.

Step 2: Using a rubber kidney, gently smooth the clay’s surface, ensuring it conforms to the mould’s shape. Repeat this process with the second piece of clay.

Step 3: Place both moulded clay pieces onto a flat board. Trim the edges where they will be joined using a clay knife. Then, create a textured surface by scoring and applying slip to both pieces.

Step 4: Bring the two clay pieces together, aligning them at the seam. Use a wooden tool to gently pinch the seam, ensuring a secure connection. Compress the seam to eliminate any gaps and refine the join using the rubber kidney for a smooth finish.

Step 5: To give your moon vase stability and character, mark where you want to place the foot ring. Roll a coil of clay and score both the coil and the base. Attach the coil securely to the base, forming the foot ring. Ensure that it sits evenly and squarely.

Step 6: Using a cookie cutter and a clay knife, carefully cut an opening in the shoulder of your vase.

Step 7: Shape a strip of clay into the desired neck form for your vase. Score the surface where the neck will attach to the shoulder and apply slip. Connect the neck securely to the shoulder, using a wooden tool and your wet finger to refine the attachment.

Step 8: To complete your moon vase, take another strip of clay, cut a hole in it, and once again, score and slip the surface. Attach this strip to the rim of the vase, adding a distinctive element to your creation.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully crafted your retro-themed moon vase. Allow it to dry thoroughly before bisque firing, and then apply glaze and fire again.
