How to make a Retro Jug

Join us today as we embark on a creative journey to craft a retro-inspired art jug. Follow these steps to create your own unique piece:

1. Start by cutting two pieces of clay and placing them on moulds.

2. Using your clay tools, shape both clay pieces into two equal halves.

3. Score and slip the edges of the two halves and bring them together. This process ensures a strong bond between the clay pieces.

4. Pinch along the seam where the two halves meet. Then, use your clay tools to compress and smooth the join, creating a seamless transition.

5. If available, a cotton reel can be used to mark the location where the spout will be placed. Also, you can roll your clay around this reel to craft the spout, giving it a unique and retro look.

6. Employ a bevel tool to create a seamless join with the spout. This tool helps ensure a clean and polished connection.

7. Score and slip end of spout and around the cut hole in shoulder, to help with reinforcing the bond.

8. Carefully attach spout to the shoulder of the jug.

9. Utilise your finger, clay tools, and a small chamois to refine and complete the spout, ensuring a sleek and pleasing appearance.

10. Roll out some clay to create the jug’s handle. Use your tools to shape the handle and consider cutting the ends with a pointed and V-shaped design. This will make attachment to the jug easier and result in a smoother finish.

11. For a unique finishing touch, consider using a small ball tool to create texture on the jug’s surface. This will enable glaze to pool in this area.

Allow to thoroughly dry before bisque firing then apply glaze and then glaze fire.

Happy Potting to you! 😀
