Crafting a Moon Vase: Step-by-Step Guide.
Today, we’re going to create a moon vase, and I’ll walk you through the process step by step.
Materials Needed:
• Clay
• Template for circles
• Mould
• Rubber kidney
• Clay knife
• Wooden tool
• Slip (clay and water mixture)
• Cookie cutter
• Sponge
Instructions:
1. Begin by using a template to cut out two circles of clay. These will form the main body of your moon vase.
For more on preparing your clay such as wedging and rolling our your clay check out our previous blog post “How to make pottery tumbler part 1-2”.
2. Place one of the clay circles over a mould, ensuring it’s centred. Use a rubber kidney to gently conform the clay to the shape of the mould. Repeat this process with the second circle.
3. Even up the rims of both clay circles using a clay knife. Then, score the rims and apply slip. Scoring helps the clay pieces adhere together.
4. Carefully join both ends of the clay circles, pinching them together securely. Use a wooden tool to ensure a smooth connection. The rubber kidney can help compress the join seamlessly.
5. Roll some clay to form feet for your vase. Cut the ends and shape each foot into a conical shape. Score and apply slip to join each foot to the base of the vase. Make sure they are evenly placed.
6. Use a wooden tool to firmly join the feet to the base. A wet finger and sponge can help finish off the base, ensuring it’s neat and smooth.
7. Use a cookie cutter to cut out a circle in the shoulder area of the vase. Clean up any rough edges using a sponge.
8. Cut out a strip of clay to create the neck of your vase. Score the strip, apply slip, and attach it to the vase’s shoulder. Use a wooden tool to secure the neck both on the outside and inside of the vase. Smooth it off with your finger.
