How-to make a French-Inspired Vase: Step-by-Step Tutorial.
Today, we’ll guide you through the process of crafting your very own French-inspired vase.
1. Begin by using templates to carefully cut out the required pieces of clay.
For more on preparing your clay and using templates check out our previous blog post “How to make a pottery tumbler part 1-2“.
2. Coil the clay to form the body of your vase, making sure to score and slip the joints for a secure attachment.
3. Next, attach the base of the vase. Remember to score and slip here as well.
4. Use a wooden tool to overlap the clay at the base, bringing it up along the wall of the body.
5. Roll a coil of clay and place it internally at the base to reinforce the connection. Ensure it joins seamlessly with the rest of the structure.
6. Employ your fingers to skilfully weld the clay together, both from the coil to the base and from the coil to the wall of the body.
7. Grab a damp sponge to tidy up all the joins on your vase. If you have a piece of chammy, run it along the edge, shaping your vase as you go.
8. Utilize wet fingers to refine the vase’s surface and finish off by giving it a gentle once-over with a sponge.
9. Now, it’s time to add some character. Use a tool with a round ball at the end to create a design like what Christine has demonstrated. This design will create a wave pattern, enhancing the glaze’s effects.
10. Once you’ve completed your design and you piece is left for a few weeks to thoroughly dry, the piece will be ready for the finishing touches, bisque fire, dip in glaze and glaze fire.
And there you have it – your beautifully crafted French-inspired vase is done.
Happy potting! 🤗
