How To Improve Glaze Results

Improving Glaze Results: Controlling Thickness

Achieving optimal glaze results requires careful control of glaze thickness. Both excessively thick and thin glazes can lead to issues such as crawling, running glazes, and inadequate coverage, affecting the durability and functionality of the glaze. In this article, we will discuss a method for controlling glaze thickness using a graduated cylinder.

To adjust glaze thickness, we focus on the Specific Gravity (SG) of the glaze. If the SG is too high, indicating that the glaze is too thick, water should be added. Conversely, if the SG is too low, indicating that the glaze is too thin, you can let it settle and gel, and then remove the excess water.

Note: When removing water from the glaze, it is essential to store it in a separate lidded container. This water contains valuable soluble materials that should be reintroduced into the glaze when necessary.

To determine the SG of the glaze, you will need a set of scales, a jug, and a graduated cylinder. Follow these steps:

1. Thoroughly mix the glaze slurry at a high speed to ensure all the ingredients are uniformly distributed and suspended.

2. Place the graduated cylinder on the scale and set the scale to zero.

3. Pour 400 ml of the glaze into the graduated cylinder.

4. Weigh the glaze in the cylinder using the scale.

5. To calculate the SG, divide the weight of the glaze (e.g., 588 grams) by the volume (400 ml). For example, if the weight is 588 grams, the SG would be 1.47.

6. If the SG is too high, gradually add small amounts of water until it reaches the desired level. Conversely, if the SG is too low, remove some water to increase it.

By following these instructions, you can improve your glaze results. Should you have any questions, require further clarification, or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments section.
