Generally, I pull my bowls up from the base upwards, slowly bringing the clay out to get the shape but this time around, I decided to actually open it from the inside out to see whether or not it would give me a different look

One of the most important things when you are with throwing is to constantly try new techniques and figure out new ways, you can do the same thing. For this particular bowl, I decided to shape it a little differently, which ended up making it one of the most consistent bowls in terms of proportion I’ve made!

Keeping your hands together when you are forming – Wheel Throwing

Thought I’d mention the technique of keeping your hands together when you are forming the base as it gives you a much stronger structure for your hands and allows you to centre the walls with a lot more ease.

Even when you centring the clay after coning, keeping your hands as close together as you can, even linking together your thumbs can help you create a triangle structure. Think of your hands as the connecting link between your shoulders and arms, creating a triangle if looked from above.

I found that, especially when you’re using large amounts of clay, technique is what allows you to throw it a lot easier, so my advice is to try keeping your hands together. Next time you throw, let us know if it works!?
