Glazing Pottery – How we glaze for the next glaze Firing

Pottery glazing techniques often involve using a resist wax to create distinct lines and boundaries on ceramic pieces. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of using hot wax and dipping glazes for pottery.

Step 1: Safety first.

Remember that hot wax can be dangerous. Ensure you work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes. Heat liquid and maintain a suitable temperature throughout the process.

Step 2: Applying the wax. Dip the bases and feet of the pottery pieces into the hot liquid wax. Be careful not to let the wax drip back onto the pot during the dipping process.

Step 3: Dip in the glaze. Submerge the wax-coated pottery pieces into the glaze, ensuring complete coverage of both the unsealed areas and the wax-coated sections. This creates defined lines and boundaries between the glazed and unglazed portions.

Step 4: Allow drying time between cover glazes. Before applying an overlay glaze, let the initial glaze dry for approximately 1 to 24 hours. This drying period allows the bisque to regain its water-absorbing ability, ensuring better glaze adhesion.

Step 5: Dip with consistency. When applying the cover glaze, ensure a consistent thickness across the entire area you’re glazing. Depended on the glaze you are using a 3 second dip may provide enough coverage and prevent issues such as excessive glaze runs during the kiln firing process.

Step 6: Remove excess glaze. After dipping the pottery in the glaze, carefully remove it from the container, avoiding contact with the sides that could cause damage. Allow any excess glaze to drip off naturally.

By following these steps, you can effectively use hot wax as a resist and achieve contrasting lines and boundaries on your pottery pieces. Remember to prioritize safety when working with hot wax and ensure proper drying times between glaze applications for optimal results. Enjoy your glazing process!

Happy potting to you! 😀
