Geoffrey Keith Townshend (NZ/Australian 1888-1969) Biography

Painter, Cartoonist / Illustrator Geoffrey was born in Auckland arrived in Australia in 1911.

Geoffrey studied at the Royal Art Society School in Sydney under Dattilo Rubbo (1870-1955).

He was a frequent contributor to the Bulletin Magazine where he worked as a cartoonist and watercolourist from 1911, After enlisting in 1915 he served for 3 years in France.

He produced drawings from the Western Front and France for the ‘Aussie’.

Geoffrey was an exhibitor, member, and Vice President with the Royal Art Society and the Australian Watercolour Institute.

A Trustee with the Art Galley of New South Wales, he was best known as a water-colourist of romantic landscapes, influenced by the work of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925).

Geoffrey is represented in the collections of a number of major Australian art galleries including

The National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of Queensland, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the National Library of Australia, Canberra and the Mitchell Library in Sydney as well as a number of regional art galleries including the Newcastle Art Gallery and the Howard Hinton Collection, New England Art Gallery.
