Creating This Elegant Kurinuki Inspired Squat Vase

Follow these steps to create this elegant Kurinuki Squat Vase, a beautiful pottery piece that will enrich any space:

Begin by rolling out an 18 mm (about 0.71 in) thick slab of clay, then cut your circles, using templates and a clay knife.

Take one of the circles and place on a mould.

Use clay tools to shape the circle, then repeat the process for second circle.

Trim edges of both halves with a clay knife, then score and apply slip before joining the two halves.

Pinch the seams together, utilising again your clay tools to compress and smooth the seam creating a seamless look.

Use a cookie cutter to mark the hole for rim, then use a paint scrapper to carve the texture into vase, we do this by lifting a small amount of clay with scrapper whilst tearing it from pot surface. This technique will give you that beautiful texture for glaze to pool and run over.

Now turn your vase over and start carving a foot ring, before using the same technique to finish off the bottom half of your vase.

Once you are satisfied, you have applied enough texture, cut your hole for your rim, and use your finger to lift the rim and shape it as required.

Your Kurinuki Bowl is ready!

Allowed to dry thoroughly before bisque firing, then apply your favourite glaze before finally putting your vase through a Glaze firing.

Happy Potting to you! 😀
