Creating a Clay Bowl Using Clay Strips: A Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these simple steps using strips of clay and a plaster mould and some tools.

1. Cut a circular piece of clay and several clay strips. The strips don’t need to be perfectly straight, as some variation adds character to the bowl.

For more on preparing your clay, using templates and some of the tools required check out our previous blog post how to make a pottery tumbler part 1-2.

2. Begin by placing the circular clay piece over the mould and look that it is in centre of the mould to ensure proper alignment.

3. Wrap one of the clay strips around the circular piece, overlapping the edges slightly. Press the joined area to create a secure bond.

4. Gently roll the area where the circular piece and the strip are joined. This will further meld the clay pieces together.

5. Add another strip, connecting it to the edge of the first strip. Keep going around the circular piece, alternating between odd and even strips. This prevents concentrated joins in one area.

6. Use a damp sponge to clean the bowl’s surface.

7. Once the clay is sufficiently dry, carefully remove the bowl from the mould. Avoid warping the shape during this process.

8. Join any uneven edges to ensure a uniform appearance. Press the edges together to secure them.

9. Use a rubber tool to finish detailing the inside of the bowl.

10. If you like you can attach a foot ring.

Remember to exercise caution while handling the clay, particularly when removing it from the plaster mould.

Happy potting! 🤗
