How to Craft a Ceramic Footed Bowl for Woven Handles:
1. Start by cutting a piece of clay using a template.
You can read more on using templates, preparing your clay, wedging, tools and many other hand building techniques in our previous blog post How to make a tumbler part 1-2
2. Use a cookie cutter to cut out the feet for the bowl.
3. Place the clay over a mould, ensuring it is centred.
4. Smooth out the top and edges using a rubber kidney, then refine the surface with a mud sponge.
5. Create the handle by using a lid as a template, and then cut out, also cut out circles for weaving using a cookie cutter.
6. Carefully attach the feet to the base by scoring and slipping all the joins. Use a modelling tool for a seamless finish.
7. Once the clay is dry, carefully remove it from the mould.
8. Use a sponge to clean up any imperfections inside and around the edge, being cautious not to over-wet the clay to avoid collapse.
9. Place a plastic bag over the pieces to allow for even drying.
10. Proceed to bisque fire the footed bowl in the kiln once it is thoroughly dry.
11. After the bisque firing, apply glaze to the bowl, and then fire it again.
12. Finally, if desired, weave decorative handles onto the footed bowl.
Follow these steps to create a stunning ceramic footed bowl with woven handles for a beautiful and functional piece.
Happy potting! 🤗
