Carved Swirl Pottery Vase

Throwing this simple little vase today, I had a moment in the studio where I was at odds as to what to make. So in an effort to free myself from overthinking, i made a quick little vase to at least get the creative ball rolling. Which it did!

The wheel, a symphony of spinning and moulding, is the bedrock for creations of all sorts of pieces from vases to bowls to even little candlesticks

As you centre the clay on the wheel, the process requires focus, yet still enjoyable. You want to keep at least one arm (lead hand) locked into either your stomach or the side of the wheel head. Once centred, it’s time to pull the walls up. Using the technique of pinching the clay with both hands and pulling the clay up to the sky, but just done pinch too much!

The wheel becomes a canvas, with the aid of your hands. The centrifugal force allows you to shape the vessel seamlessly, creating graceful curves or bold angles. Beyond the technical aspects, throwing on the wheel is a tactile engagement and the focus required often clears away any cobwebs that may be clouding your mind haha

Even if you’ve never considered yourself an artist, the pottery wheel will allow you to unlock your talent and creativity. Maybe this post is sign to give it a go?

Happy Potting Everyone!!! 🥳🥳
