In today’s video I’ll be guiding you through crafting a ceramic bowl.
Start by centring approximately 1100 grams of clay on the wheel head. Use your fingers and thumbs to shape the base. Unlike my usual process of shaping the bowl immediately after forming the base.
Instead, I elevated the walls first and then expanded the clay outward. This technique actually served me quite well in terms of getting a pretty well balanced bowl. To refine the form, I employ a rib and a wooden tool for a distinctive ripply pattern on the interior.
After that I’ll use a turning tool to trim the base’s sides slightly before detaching it from the bat. Allow the bowl to air-dry for 24 to 48 hours, then reposition it on the wheel head for final base trimming. Typically, I add a foot ring to most of my pots and decided to also incorporated an external foot on the bowl’s exterior for added character.
