Unlock the Secrets of Hand-Building

✨ Introducing Christine’s Pumpkin ✨

Ready to dive into the enchanting world of ceramics? Here’s a step-by-step guide to handcrafting a textured pumpkin that’s perfect for Autumn décor.

1. Roll out your clay to about 8mm thick—this is the perfect foundation for your hand-built pumpkin.

2. Use templates to cut out two identical clay circles.

3. Carefully place each clay circle onto round plaster moulds.

4. Once the clay has firmed a little, gently remove it from the mould Trim the edges so that both halves fit snugly together.

5. Score and slip the edges, then join the two halves together. Smooth out the seam with your fingers and tools.

6. Use your clay tools to refine the shape and compress the joins. Don’t forget to create a small vent hole at the bottom for kiln firing.

7. Roll out a small piece of clay to create the pumpkin’s stalk. Score, slip, and attach it to the top.

8. Use a damp sponge tool to smooth out the pumpkin’s surface, giving it that professional look.

9. Press clay into a sprig or plant mould to create beautiful surface details. Once firm, attach these textures using the score and slip method.

10. Smooth out any rough areas, especially around the textured details.

11. Cover your pumpkin with plastic bags to ensure it dries evenly, preventing cracks or warping.

12. Once fully dry, bisque fire your pumpkin. Then, apply your glaze and give it a final glaze firing for a stunning, finished piece.
