Creating a Moon Vase Tutorial

Ready to craft your own Moon Vase? Follow this step-by-step guide to hand-build a beautiful ceramic piece.

Materials Needed:

• Clay

• Circle template

• Mould

• Rubber kidney tool

• Clay knife

• Wooden tool

• Slip (clay and water mix)

• Cookie cutter

• Sponge

Instructions:

1. Cut Circles: Use the template to cut out two clay circles. These will be the vase’s body.

2. Shape with Mould: Place a clay circle over the mould, centring it carefully. Use the rubber kidney to conform the clay to the mould. Repeat with the second circle.

3. Prepare Edges: Even out the rims with a clay knife. Score the edges and apply slip to ensure a strong bond.

4. Join Circles: Carefully join the clay circles’ rims, pinching them securely. Use a wooden tool to smooth the connection. The rubber kidney helps to compress the join seamlessly.

5. Create Feet: Roll clay to form feet for your vase. Shape each foot conically, score, and apply slip to attach them evenly to the vase’s base.

6. Secure Feet: Firmly join the feet using a wooden tool. Finish off the base with a wet finger and sponge for a neat, smooth look.

7. Cut Opening: Use a cookie cutter to cut out a circle in the vase’s shoulder area. Smooth any rough edges with a sponge.

8. Add Neck: Cut a strip of clay for the neck. Score and apply slip to attach it to the vase’s shoulder. Use a wooden tool to secure the neck inside and out, then smooth it with your finger.

Allow the vase to dry thoroughly, then bisque fire it before glazing for an exquisite finish.

Each step brings you closer to a stunning Moon Vase, perfect for decorating your space or gifting. Happy crafting!
