Discover the technique behind our weaved ruffled bowl

Step 1 Start by cutting a piece of clay using a template. Place the clay on a plaster mould and shape the feet of the bowl, we used a soft drink bottle to create the plaster mould.

Step 2 Use a custom tool to create ruffles, and a damp sponge to smooth out any imperfections.

Step 3 Once the clay is firm enough, remove it from the mould and place on bench. Clean the interior and exterior with a damp sponge, ensuring a smooth finish.

Step 4 Use a hole tool to create weaving holes, insert the tool into clay at even intervals, twist and remove clay, then use a cotton bud to clean up holes

Step 5 Refine the rim of the vase with your finger and a piece of chamois. Allow the masterpiece to dry thoroughly before bisque firing.

Step 6 Once bisque fired decorate your bowl with your favourite glaze combo, then glaze fire your bowl.

Step 7 Soak the pine needles in hot water. After draining, place them within a damp tea towel.

Step 8 Using tools like scissors, a large sewing needle, a pine needle feeder, and some clothes pegs/clamps, start weaving.

Step 9 Thread a large needle with jute, utilising the pine feeder to guide the pine needles, delicately wind the jute around the pine needles, maintain control over thickness by feeding additional needles into the pine feeder.

Step 10 Place pegs on bends to aid in both drying and shaping the pine needles as you progress around the bowl.

Step 11 Continues this meticulous process until five layers of pine needles are seamlessly stitched together. Allow the work to dry thoroughly, then apply the sealant, oil generously over all the pine needles. This final touch not only serves to protect but also to preserve your work.
