No Wheel Required to Build this Squat Vase

Join us today as we embark on the creative journey of making a unique squat vase. This elegant piece will enhance any space, and here’s how to craft it:

Begin by thoroughly compressing your clay to ensure it’s ready for shaping.

Cut out two circles from the clay. Place one of these circles on a mould.

Utilise your clay tools to shape the clay on the mould, trim the edges ensuring it takes the desired form.

Repeat the shaping process on the second clay circle to create the other half of your vase.

Score and slip the edges of both halves, then carefully bring them together to form the complete vase.

Go around and pinch a seam, pinching it to ensure a solid connection. Employ your clay tools to compress and refine the seam for a polished finish.

Using a cookie cutter, mark a hole for the neck of the vase. Then, cut out this hole.

Take a strip of clay to create the neck of the vase. Place it on the shoulder of the vase, ensuring it’s well-aligned and balanced.

Don’t forget to score and slip the connection point before attaching the neck to the shoulder. This step guarantees a secure and durable join.

Employ your clay tools, a potter’s kidney, and a damp sponge to smooth out the entire surface of the vase. This will result in a flawless and polished appearance.

To create an interesting texture on the surface, use a ball tool to run lines over the vase. This not only adds character but also provides an area for the glaze to pool, enhancing the overall effect.

With these careful and creative steps, you’ve created a stunning squat vase. This unique piece will not only serve as a functional vessel but also as a work of art that can elevate your space with its elegance and charm.

Allow to thoroughly dry before bisque firing then apply glaze and then glaze fire.

Happy Potting to you! 😀
