Making A Pottery Flower Pot

So for today’s video, I’ll be showing you how to make this flower pot. This is only the second pot that I have made with its soul purpose to be used as a garden feature. But looking to also make some more too as I think they are a great functional piece!

Feel free to let me know what you think. In the comments 🤗

To make your own I’ve included some tips below:

Start by wedging and kneading your clay to remove air bubbles and create a consistent texture. Then, center a lump of clay on the wheel head. I generally cone the clay around 2-3 times, to make sure your clay is well centred

We then can move on to shaping the pot by pushing your thumbs into the center of the clay, creating an initial hollow. Gradually widen and deepen this hollow to form the base of your flower pot. Keep the walls of the base relatively thick to support the weight of the upper portion.

As you work your way up the pot, gently flare out the clay at the top to create the ruffled lip (a lot like you would on a pie). Use your fingers or a shaping tool to create the desired ruffled effect. The design of the lip is where your creativity can shine. You can make it simple and elegant or more intricate and decorative, totally up to you!

Once the lip is shaped to your liking, it’s time to create a drainage hole in the bottom of the pot. Use a carving tool or a knife to carefully pierce a hole near the center of the base. This hole should be small but large enough to allow excess water to escape, remember that most clays shrink about 20% so a small hole will be even smaller when its fired and thats not including the glaze that will be on top

Allow the piece to dry for a day or two depending on your studio condition, you can then trim the bottom of the pot to create a flat, stable base. Be sure the rim is dry enough to support the handling without losing its shape!

Hope you enjoyed this post and as always Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳
