Making A Twist Design Vase

Today we have this small spiral vase that I recently threw on the wheel

While I have done similar shapes like this one before this was one of my more deliberate attempts.

Using a slow speed on the wheel, this allowed me to really stretch the clay in one go, adding a little more prep beforehand but paying off in the end. My advice for throwing something similar to this is to make sure its one of the last steps you do, once you’ve committed to the design its a hard thing to get back again and can easily be lost.

Few Tips On How I Made This:

Different clays have different textures, colors, and properties, so choose one that your comfortable with, “plastic like” clays respond a lot better to stretching. While others can simply tear, so know your clays beforehand and get to know its limitations before trying, or just give it a try and see how you go!! 🤩

For a small vase, start with a moderate amount of clay. You can adjust the quantity based on your design but this particular piece was around 500 grams of clay. Once you have it centred on the wheel, the. Next step is to form the base and bring up the walls to the desired height.

Not the finishing of the vase pretty much as to be done before you stretch the twist design, using a sponge afterwards to finish the surface can run the risk of flattening out the design, my option would be to leave the final finishing until after the leather hard stage if you don’t want to beforehand

We then can trim the base and leave for about 24-48hrs under a plastic bag before trimming a root ring to the base!

Hope you enjoyed this post and as always Happy Potting!!! 🥳🥳
