How to Make Your Own Art Vase

Christine is set to craft an art vase today.🎬

She begins by laying her template over a rolled slab of compressed clay and carefully cutting it into a circular form.

For more on preparing your clay and what tools you can use, check out our previous blog post “How to make a pottery tumbler part 1-2“.

With care, she positions the clay onto a mould, ensuring it sits perfectly in the centre.

Using a rubber kidney tool, she refines the surface, ensuring a smooth finish.

The next step is crafting the foot ring. Christine shapes a piece of clay into a coil, then scores and applies slip to the base, and attaches the coil securely to the base using a wooden pottery tool.

Employing the same tool, she adds texture just below the vase’s rim, creating a surface for the glaze to exhibit colour variations, where the glaze is thin and where thick.

To perfect the exterior, Christine employs a foam kidney, tidying up the vase’s surface, before flipping vase to switch her attention to the interior, carefully smoothing away rough bits of clay it with a sponge.

Using her clay knife, she trims the rim, ensuring it’s neat and even, and smooths it with her sponge for glaze to run evenly over rim.

In the final touches, Christine gently folds in the sides and lifts the ends slightly to give the vase an elegant, cupped shape.
