West German Inspired Vase

This shape was actually inspired by some west German vases we have in our living room. I wanted to recreate it in a smaller form and see how it looks with some of our new glazes!

Some Tips!:

1. Setting the clay centre:

Begin by centering the clay on the wheel, ensuring it’s symmetrical and balanced. The clay should be moist but not excessively wet, allowing for a firm grip during the throwing process.

2. Opening the Clay:

Using your fingers, press firmly into the center of the clay mound to create a hole, gradually widening it while keeping the base thick enough to provide stability. This initial opening sets the foundation for the pot’s shape and size.

3. Bringing the Wall Up:

With the center established, gently start pulling the clay upwards while maintaining a uniform thickness in the wall. To achieve the desired shape of a lip, concentrate on gradually widening the base more than the top. This controlled pulling requires consistent pressure and movement to avoid uneven walls and wobbling.

4. Ensuring Control:

Throughout the process, maintain a balanced grip on the pot and the wheel. Avoid applying excessive pressure or pulling unevenly, as this can lead to unintended distortions or even collapsing of the pot. The key is to find a balance between control and flexibility.

5. Smoothing with a Rubber Kidney:

Once the pot has taken shape and the lip is well-defined, it’s time to enhance the outer surface. A rubber kidney is a valuable tool for this purpose. Dip the rubber kidney in water to lubricate it, then gently stroke the exterior surface to smooth out any imperfections and refine the overall shape.

6. Finishing Touches:

At this stage, you can make further adjustments to the lip and shape of the pot, refining its appearance to your desired specifications. Pay attention to details and symmetry while staying true to your artistic vision.

Hope you enjoyed this post and as always, Happy Potting! 🥳
