How to make a pottery Squat Vase

Here’s a concise explanation of the pottery-making procedure:

To create a squat vase, start by using a protractor to cut out two circles from slab clay. Place these circles on plaster moulds, ensuring they are level and smoothing out any imperfections with a tool.

For more information on what tools you might need and also preparing your clay, including wedging and rolling out your clay check out our previous blog, post how to create a pottery tumbler part 1-2.

Once the clay is dry enough, remove them from the moulds and score both insides before adding slip.

Join both sides of the vase by firmly pressing them together and smoothing the edges with a tool. Go around and smooth joins, also paying attention to the correct shape you want.

Attach the feet by scoring and slipping them onto the vase’s bottom, and then smooth and secure them using your finger and a mud sponge.

To create the neck of the vase, take a strip of slab of clay and wrap it around to a desired thickness. Cut off any clay at an angle at ends to join, and score, plus apply slip, shape it according to your preference. Place on top of vase and ensure the alignment is right cut a hole in the top of vase.

Next Score around hole in vase and the neck, apply slip, and confirm the alignment once again. Now join neck to top of vase Use a tool to join the inside of the neck. Roll out a coil of clay to securely attach the neck to the vase at the join inside the neck.

Lastly, clean up the entire vase, being careful not to wet it excessively to avoid collapsing it.

By following these steps, you can successfully create a squat vase from slab clay.

Happy potting! 🤗
