From rolling the clay slab to the final glaze firing, follow these instructions to create your own masterpiece.
Step 1: Preparing the Clay Slab.
Roll out a clay slab to around 8mm thickness. Place it onto a supportive mould that provides structure throughout the process.
Step 2: Conforming Clay to Mould.
Position the clay over the mould and use a cushion to shape it according to the mould’s contours.
Step 3: Stamping Patterns.
Select a textured stamp, like a pansy stamp, and press it onto the clay slab to create intricate patterns on the plate’s surface.
Step 4: Constructing and Attaching Feet.
Shape small amounts of clay into feet and securely attach them to the plate’s base. Ensure proper alignment for stability, using scoring and slipping techniques for secure attachment.
Step 5: Base and Inside Plate Clean-up.
Smooth any imperfections on the base using a flexible rubber kidney tool. Once dry, remove the plate from the mould and repeat the clean-up process for the inside of the plate. Finish by using a damp foam kidney tool for a polished look.
Step 6: Bisque Firing.
Allow the footed pottery plate to thoroughly dry, then subject it to a bisque firing. This firing removes moisture and transforms the clay into a porous clay body.
Step 7: Underglaze and Painting.
After the bisque firing, apply 1-2 coats of coloured underglaze to the plate’s surface. Use precise brushstrokes to bring the pansy patterns to life. Pay close attention to detail for the desired effect.
Step 8: Glaze Firing.
Once the underglaze is dry, dip the plate in a clear glaze base coat and let it dry. Now, your plate is ready for the final glaze firing.
