Introduction
Charles was born in Germany 1934; he has been recognized for the development of his own unique style; he studied with other accomplished artists specializing in landscapes and harbour vista’s whilst in Europe.
Arriving in Australia in 1957, Charles travelled and painted the Australian scape, adapting his European style to accommodate the vast open spaces, its unique and intense light, mainly using oil paints and watercolour.
His harbour scenes and cityscapes are some of Charles best works; his use of thick paint to depict atmosphere, light and movement puts Charles in a class of his own with a style sometimes mistaken for European artists, yet at the same time uniquely Australian.
Charles is a member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists and the Peninsula Arts Society; he also taught students painting and drawing at his Mt Eliza studio. Some of these students became professional artists.
