11 seconds of glazing

Today’s vase was glazed with our beautiful new sapphire blue glaze. I wanted to try mixing a few glazes together in the application process to see whether or not, we could get a different effect using three different glazes. ☺️

I started off by putting a base blue sapphire glaze on the outside of the vase, as well as the inside before moving onto adding pink and a variegated green cover glaze to see how they would interact with each other

One thing I did notice is that, the blue is quite powerful and it did slightly dampen the intensity of the pink and the green, which is to be expected, considering the blue does have cobalt in it, which is a very very powerful colourant

When I am glazing my pieces, I tend to add a wax to the bottom of the vase or piece that I am glazing, this allows for a very easy cleanup and saves you having to sponge rings or bases on any of your own pots. We use a little bit of beeswax heated up in a saucepan.

The slip trial I’m using is just a standard slip trailer that you can get from any Pottery store, I would recommend getting a smaller one as you can get a little bit more pressure out of the smaller than you can a larger one

Make sure to wipe down the sides of your buckets when you are finished with the glaze. This helps keep your glaze buckets nice and clean and saves any mess in the studio. it also saves any dried chunks of glaze, falling back into the glaze mixture, and possibly causing any problems with application, chemistry or mixing

As a side note. We did pull out some brand-new glazed pieces today in our recent kiln firing which have all been glazed slightly different than what I’ve been showing you over the last week so I’ll be excited to show you the new pieces and I will also be having a brand-new wheel throwing video ready as well!

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask! We would love to help you with your glazing! 🤗
