Measuring 22cm x 14cm x 14cm and weighing 1135gm, this vase is signed and marked “Japan” on the base, indicating its authenticity and historical significance. Despite some light wear from use, it remains in great condition, as detailed in our photos.<\/p>\n
About Awaji Pottery<\/b><\/p>\n
Awaji ware was founded in the early 1830s by Minpei Kashu (1796\u20131871), a scholar of classical literature and a master of the art of chanoyu. Coming from a wealthy trading family, Minpei was concerned about the development of industrial resources in his province. He studied ceramics under the famous Kyoto potter Ogata Shuhei (1788-1839) and established his own kilns in the fifth year of Tenp\u014d (1835\/1836). Some sources cite an earlier founding year of 1831.<\/p>\n
Minpei’s manufactory, subsidized by Lord Hachisuka of Awaji Province, reached such prosperity that its production equaled the value of the rice harvest of eleven surrounding villages. After Minpei’s death in 1862, his successors continued the tradition, making Awaji pottery a source of wealth for the province until the last kilns shut down in the 1930s.<\/p>\n
