When collecting silver, start with three questions: what is it made from, what do its marks tell you, and what condition is it in?

Sterling Silver, 800 Silver or Silver Plate?

Most silver objects are made from an alloy: silver mixed with other metals. The silver standard, or fineness, describes the proportion of silver in that alloy.

Sterling silver: contains 92.5% silver. It may carry 925, STERLING or recognised historic silver standard marks.

800 silver: contains 80% silver. It is a silver alloy in its own right, commonly encountered in continental European wares.

Other silver standards: marks such as 830, 835 and 900 indicate different proportions of silver. Read them alongside the other marks on the piece.

Silver plate: has a layer of silver over another metal. Marks may include EPNS, EP or SILVER PLATED.

European silver is not a single standard: European makers produced both sterling and other silver alloys. An 800 mark alone does not identify the country, maker or age.

EPNS means electroplated nickel silver. The silver is in the surface plating. A1 on plated ware is not a sterling fineness mark, although well-made silver plate can still be collectable for its maker, design and condition.

How to Read Silver Hallmarks

Examine and photograph the complete group of marks before interpreting individual symbols. Depending on the country and period, you may find:

A sponsor’s or maker’s mark: initials or a symbol identifying the responsible business. A sponsor may be an importer or retailer rather than the manufacturer.

A silver standard mark: a number or recognised symbol indicating the silver content.

An assay office mark: identifies where the piece was tested and hallmarked, which may differ from where it was made.

A date letter: where used, identifies the hallmarking year within that office’s sequence.

Date letters repeat across different cycles. Match the letter’s font, case and surrounding shield to the correct assay office chart.

Older sterling silver does not always carry a numeric 925 stamp. A recognised historic standard mark may serve that purpose. Initials or a number on their own are not conclusive identification.

A Glasgow Serviette Ring: Reading the Marks

Glasgow hallmark group showing the J.R sponsor’s mark, town mark, lion rampant sterling standard and date letter F for 1902.

The Scottish serviette ring illustrated in this guide has raised thistle decoration, beaded borders and an engraved monogram.

Its hallmark group includes the J.R sponsor’s mark, the Glasgow town mark, a lion rampant sterling standard mark and a date letter F matching Glasgow’s 1902 sequence.

Read together, these marks support its description as sterling silver hallmarked in Glasgow in 1902. The sponsor’s identity requires separate research before assigning a definite manufacturer. The thistle decoration adds Scottish character, but decoration alone would not establish its silver content or date.

Condition and Construction

Look beyond tarnish. Check for dents, splits, repairs, thin areas, worn decoration and rubbed hallmarks.

On spoons, examine the bowl, stem and decorative finial. On serviette rings, check the shape, seams and engraved panels. For boxes and tableware, inspect hinges, feet, handles and removable components.

Some pieces have silver shells, weighted bases or non-silver fittings. Their total weight is not their silver weight. Construction needs to be understood before estimating the amount of silver present.

What Makes Silver Collectable?

Maker, age, design, rarity, provenance, condition and completeness all influence collecting appeal. Higher silver content does not automatically mean greater value: an interesting 800 silver object may be more desirable than an ordinary sterling example.

Monograms and inscriptions can add personal history, although their appeal varies between buyers. Clear hallmarks, crisp decoration and original components help collectors assess a piece.

A useful starting point is to collect a particular type, such as Scottish silver, continental spoons or serviette rings. Keep photographs of marks, measurements and any supporting documentation.

Caring for Antique and Collectable Silver

Polish sparingly. Repeated polishing removes a little metal and can soften engraving, hallmarks and raised decoration. Silver-plated surfaces are especially vulnerable.

Avoid aggressive cleaning and general-purpose metal polishes. Keep pieces dry and protected from scratches, using suitable anti-tarnish storage where practical.

Do not soak objects with filled bases, hollow sections or vulnerable attachments. Seek specialist advice before treating gilding, repairs or delicate mixed-material pieces.

Explore Silver at TMC Emporium

Explore sterling silver and other collectable silver pieces at TMC Emporium.
