Artist Biography, Life Drawing & Collecting Guide

An ink drawing can convey the weight and character of a figure through a small number of carefully observed lines. This guide introduces Melbourne artist Roz McQuillan, whose documented interest in the human figure provides a useful context for the original drawing Male Nude Standing at TMC Art.

Who is Roz McQuillan?

McQuillan’s artist biography records a Diploma of Illustration from RMIT and a career in children’s-book illustration before her wider fine-art practice. Her work includes portraits and figure studies in media such as ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolour and oil.

In her artist statement, she describes an interest in individual character, bodily expression and the effects of light. These concerns connect observation of the model with the way a drawing or painting communicates presence and mood.

Life drawing and Melbourne’s art community

Brighton Art Society lists McQuillan as a convenor of life-drawing and painting sessions. The figure is therefore a documented part of her practice, rather than a subject inferred from a single work. Her exhibition history also includes solo shows recorded in her artist profile, including Tacit Gallery in 2016.
