Marked examples provide an important starting point: the maker’s name and place-of-manufacture wording can be photographed and compared with documented pieces.

This guide introduces the Huntly Pottery examples examined by The McCorry Collection, including koalas and kookaburras. It will expand as further forms, marks and documentary evidence become available.

History and the Bendigo connection

ABCR Auctions describes Huntly Pottery as a small family pottery established in 1986. Its catalogue includes the kookaburra group “A Story of Love”, providing a documented example of the pottery’s Australiana subjects.

The example illustrated in this guide carries the printed wording “MADE IN BENDIGO AUSTRALIA”, alongside a separate rectangular “HUNTLY POTTERY” mark. These marks establish how this piece identifies its maker and place of manufacture.

The 1986 establishment date is reported by the auction source; it is not a production date for this individual kookaburra. A fuller account of ownership, workshop locations and production periods requires further documentary research.

Huntly Pottery and similar names

Use the spelling present on the object: HUNTLY POTTERY. Search results and sale descriptions sometimes use “Huntley”, but a seller’s spelling should not replace the wording on the base.

“Made in Bendigo” identifies a place. It does not, by itself, establish that a piece was made by the business named Bendigo Pottery. Histories associated with Glen Huntly or other similarly named pottery businesses should not be transferred to these marked examples without documentary evidence connecting them.

Subjects and forms collectors encounter

The TMC examples examined so far include seated koalas and a kookaburra perched on a stump-style base.

Published auction catalogues document additional Huntly Pottery forms, including kangaroos, cockatoos, larger koalas, kookaburra groups and an antique-style water filter with cover and stand. These references show a broader range than the small animal figures alone.

Record the actual size and form of each piece. A small single kookaburra is a different collecting and pricing comparison from a much larger bird or a multi-bird group.

Glazes and decoration

The examples illustrated by TMC show glossy mottled finishes combining brown, cream-white, grey, blue and green in varying proportions. Colour placement can differ across the head, breast, wings and base.

Describe what is visible rather than assigning an undocumented glaze name or recipe. “Glossy mottled glaze” is a useful description of appearance. Auction references sometimes use “majolica-style”, but that wording should not be treated as proof of a specific clay body, glaze chemistry or firing process.

A familiar colour combination alone is not sufficient to identify an unmarked piece. Compare its complete form and base with marked examples.

Huntly Pottery backstamps

The supplied kookaburra shows two blue printed marks on its unglazed underside:

HUNTLY POTTERY within a rectangular border.

MADE IN BENDIGO AUSTRALIA arranged in three lines.

Describe these as printed backstamps, rather than incised signatures or impressed marks. A maker’s stamp does not make an object artist-signed.

This is one recorded marking arrangement, not a complete chronology of Huntly Pottery marks. The absence of a mark from one photograph does not establish that it was never present. Photograph the whole underside in clear light before drawing conclusions.

Example 1 — Kookaburra with Huntly Pottery and Bendigo marks

[Insert image 02 here, with its caption.]

This example has the rectangular HUNTLY POTTERY stamp beside the separate MADE IN BENDIGO AUSTRALIA wording. Both marks are printed in blue on a pale, unglazed base, alongside a circular opening.

The opening documents the construction of this particular figure. It is not a date mark or an independent identification test.

The illustrated kookaburra has a prominent beak, rounded cream-white breast and long tail, and stands on a stump-style base. Its glossy decoration combines brown, cream-white, grey, blue and green tones.

The backstamps identify the maker and stated place of manufacture, but do not establish the year the figure was produced.

Identifying and dating a piece

Start with the object rather than a repeated online description. Photograph its front, back, sides, underside and any marks. Record measurements and weight, then compare the same subject and size with documented examples.

A maker identification and a manufacture date are separate conclusions. A business’s reported founding year, the publication date of a catalogue and the date of a second-hand sale are not interchangeable.

Avoid assigning “1950s”, “mid-century” or another period simply because a glaze looks old-fashioned. Where a date cannot be established, record it as unknown.

Condition and collecting

Examine projecting beaks, ears, tails and raised details, as well as the underside and base rim. Check for chips, body cracks, repairs, glaze losses and staining.

Glaze crazing is a network of fine cracks in the glaze and should be distinguished from a crack through the ceramic body. Describe visible crazing even when a piece has no chips or structural damage.

Careful condition photographs help collectors compare examples fairly. Retain worn marks and visible surface details in photographs.

Values and buying comparisons

Assess subject, size, condition, completeness, glaze appeal and identification together. Documented auction examples show collecting interest, but larger figures and groups should not be used as direct price comparisons for small single animals.

Distinguish asking prices, auction estimates and published sale results. Check whether any reported result includes buyer’s premium before comparing it with a retail price.

Caring for and displaying Huntly Pottery

Support a figure around its main body and base rather than lifting it by a beak, ear or tail. Display it on a stable surface away from places where projecting details may be knocked.

Begin with gentle dry dusting. Avoid soaking pieces with crazing, cracks or uncertain repairs, and avoid abrasive cleaning of glazed surfaces and printed marks. Treatment of stubborn staining or repairs should be considered separately from routine dusting.

Expanding the reference collection

TMC Emporium will add further photographs as more Huntly Pottery pieces are examined. Each reference should record the form, dimensions, glaze, observed marks, condition and evidence for any proposed date.

Additional examples can be placed below Example 1. Different sizes or mark arrangements should be documented without assuming that they represent successive production periods.

Explore more

Read our Australian Pottery & Ceramics — History, Marks and Collecting Guide.

Browse Australian Pottery & Ceramics.

References and further reading

ABCR Auctions — Huntly Pottery “A Story of Love” kookaburra example and reported establishment date

Leski Auctions — documented Huntly Pottery forms and base-mark descriptions

Leski Auctions — “A Story of Love” figural group, lot 176

About TMC Emporium

TMC Emporium is part of The McCorry Collection, alongside TMC Art.
