From elegant ladies in flowing gowns to children, dancers and familiar character studies, their appeal lies in the combination of sculptural detail, expressive faces and carefully decorated surfaces.

For some collectors, a single inherited figure begins a lifelong interest. Others collect a particular modeller, colourway or theme, gradually building a display that reflects their own taste. This guide introduces their history, explains the markings found beneath them and outlines what to look for when buying vintage and later examples.

A Brief History of Royal Doulton Figurines

The Doulton business began in Lambeth, London, in 1815. Its early output included practical stoneware, followed by an increasingly important range of artistic and decorative ceramics.

Expansion into Burslem, Staffordshire, helped develop the company’s decorative wares and bone china. In 1901, a royal warrant granted by Edward VII allowed the business to adopt the Royal Doulton name.

The HN figurine collection launched in 1913 under the artistic direction of Charles J. Noke. Its first numbered figure, Darling HN1, was modelled by Charles Vyse and is associated with Queen Mary’s admiration during a royal visit.

Over the following decades, Royal Doulton developed an extensive figurine collection. Changing fashions, historical subjects and everyday characters provided inspiration, while different modellers brought their own approaches to expression, costume and movement.

Why Collect Royal Doulton Figurines?

The variety of Royal Doulton figurines makes it possible to collect broadly or pursue a particular interest.

Popular collecting themes include:

• Elegant ladies and period costume
• Children and family life
• Ballet, dance and theatrical subjects
• Christmas, winter and the four seasons
• Historical figures and royalty
• Literary characters
• Occupations, street sellers and maritime subjects
• Animals and characterful everyday scenes

A collection might focus on one modeller, a favourite colour palette, a series or a particular period. Matching figures can create a cohesive display, while contrasting subjects reveal the breadth of the company’s designs.

Royal Doulton figurines also carry personal associations. A figure may commemorate a birthday, recall a family home or represent an interest shared across generations.

Modellers and Designers to Know

Knowing who modelled a figure adds another dimension to collecting. The modeller created the sculptural design; the decorator painted the individual example.

Name

Contribution to Royal Doulton figurines

Charles J. Photograph the complete base clearly before trying to interpret individual markings.

Look for:

• The Royal Doulton factory mark
• The figure’s name
• Its HN number or another identifying reference
• Country-of-manufacture wording
• Material descriptions, such as bone china
• A copyright date
• A modeller’s name or printed signature
• Edition numbers or collectors’ club wording
• Any separate date code, symbol or handwritten initials

Then compare the markings with the figure itself. Its height, pose, accessories, colours and costume should match the documented model.

Names alone are not always enough. Similar titles, different colourways and revised versions can lead to mistaken identification.

What Does the HN Number Mean?

The HN prefix refers to Harry Nixon, who supervised the early figurine painting department.

An HN number identifies a figure or a particular decorated version. It is not a serial number unique to your individual example, and it does not establish its manufacture year.

Always record the name and HN number together—for example, The Skater HN3439.

Colourways and Variations

A colourway is a particular arrangement of colours used to decorate a figure. Some designs appeared in several versions, and these may have different HN numbers.

Small differences in hand-painted decoration can also occur between examples of the same version. An unusual colour should be investigated carefully before describing a piece as a rare colourway or colour trial.

Royal Doulton Backstamps and Dating Marks

Backstamps provide valuable clues, but there is no single stamp for every decade. Some marks remained in use for many years, and changes could overlap.

This section will grow as we add clear photographs from figurines handled by TMC Emporium. Each example will show the complete base, the figure’s name and number, and the evidence supporting its date.

Early Figurines and Pre-War Examples

Early bases may combine a printed factory mark with handwritten names, HN numbers and other details.

Identify the model first, then compare the markings with documented examples. A low HN number can indicate an early design, but it does not prove that every example was made at the beginning of its production run.

Backstamp photograph area: early and pre-war figurines.

Figurines from the 1940s and 1950s

Figures from this period may carry the familiar lion-and-crown mark alongside model details, registration references or decorator’s marks.

Some examples have a small numerical date code associated with the factory mark. Where that code is positively identified, adding it to 1927 gives the production year: a code of 14, for example, indicates 1941.

Do not apply this calculation to an HN number, registration number or unidentified numeral.

Backstamp photograph area: documented 1940s and 1950s examples.

Figurines from the 1960s

Printed names and HN numbers are encountered on post-war figures, although marking formats vary.

A design introduced earlier may still have been produced during the 1960s. Its introduction date therefore needs to be distinguished from the age of the individual example.

Backstamp photograph area: documented 1960s examples.

Figurines from the 1970s

Compare the complete factory mark, model details and any copyright wording. Avoid assigning a figure to the 1970s from one feature of its stamp alone.

Backstamp photograph area: documented 1970s examples.

Figurines from the 1980s

Later bases can provide more printed information, including the figure’s name, HN number, modeller attribution, copyright details or collectors’ club wording.

A copyright year usually relates to the design. It should not automatically be entered as the year the individual figure was manufactured.

1980s Backstamp Example: Wintertime HN3060

Wintertime HN3060: Collectors Club backstamp with a 1985 copyright line and Adrian Hughes modeller credit. The copyright year alone does not establish the manufacture date.

The base of Wintertime HN3060 shows the Royal Doulton factory mark, figure name, HN number and International Collectors Club identification. Record the copyright year separately from the manufacture date: the printed 1985 date does not, by itself, establish when this individual figure was made. The signature-style Adrian Hughes credit identifies the modeller; it should not automatically be described as a personally signed autograph.

Figurines from the 1990s

Some figures carry specific issue wording that offers stronger dating evidence than a copyright date.

The Skater HN3439 provides a useful example. Its base names Peter Gee and carries the explicit wording “1992 – First Year of Issue”. Record that wording in full when describing such an example.

1990s Backstamp Example: The Skater HN3439

The Skater HN3439 backstamp, with ©1992 and the separate “1992 – First Year of Issue” inscription.

This backstamp comes from Royal Doulton’s The Skater HN3439, modelled by Peter Gee. It identifies the maker, model name and HN number, together with the bone china material and the statement that the figurine was hand made and hand decorated.

Two date markings appear on this example: ©1992 Royal Doulton and the separate inscription “1992 – First Year of Issue”.

A copyright date alone generally relates to the design and should not automatically be treated as the manufacturing date of every example. Here, the additional first-year inscription identifies the figurine as a 1992 first-year-of-issue example, making it suitable for the guide’s 1990s backstamp section.

The HN3439 number identifies the model; it is not a date code or an individual serial number. The printed modeller’s name is an attribution, rather than evidence of a personal autograph.

Use this photograph as a documented example of a mark found on a 1992 figurine. Do not assume that every figurine with a similar Royal Doulton logo dates to that year: model details, additional inscriptions and other dating evidence should also be considered.

Later and Modern Figurines

Later figurines may carry annual issue details, edition numbers, symbols or different country-of-manufacture wording.

Royal Doulton’s British origins do not mean that every later figure was made in England. Read the individual base and identify the model before recording its origin.

Backstamp photograph area: later figurines, edition marks and country-of-manufacture variations.

Copyright Dates, Issue Dates and Signatures

Keep these distinctions in mind:

• A copyright date relates to the design and may appear on figures produced later.
• A model’s issue period describes when that design was available.
• “First Year of Issue” is a specific marking worth recording separately.
• A registration number concerns the registered design, rather than directly dating an individual casting.
• A printed modeller’s signature is an attribution, not a hand autograph.
• Handwritten initials may belong to a decorator rather than the modeller.

The strongest identification combines several pieces of evidence.

What Makes a Royal Doulton Figurine Valuable?

Age can contribute to desirability, but it is only one factor.

Certain early figures, scarce colourways and short-lived designs can attract strong collector interest. Later figures can also be desirable, particularly when a sought-after subject or limited edition is difficult to obtain.

However, neither “vintage” nor “limited edition” guarantees a high price.

Consider:

• The exact model and colourway
• Availability and collector demand
• Length of the production run
• Condition and restoration
• Edition size, where applicable
• Original certificates and packaging
• Recent sales of genuinely comparable examples

A popular design produced for many years may be relatively affordable, while a less familiar figure can be difficult to find. Asking prices should be distinguished from completed sales.

Understanding Limited Editions

A numbered limited edition restricts the stated edition size. A limited annual issue restricts the issue period. These are different arrangements.

Check the wording on the base and any certificate. Where an edition number appears on both, they should match.

A first-year example is also distinct from a numbered limited edition. It should be described accurately without implying that the marking guarantees rarity or an additional premium.

Condition: What to Examine Before Buying

Condition is one of the most important considerations when collecting figurines.

Inspect the figure in good light, paying particular attention to projecting details:

• Fingers and hands
• Bonnet rims and hat brims
• Flowers, ribbons and accessories
• Skirt hems and thin folds
• Feet, shoes and skates
• The base rim and underside

Look for small nicks, chips, hairline cracks, missing details, glue and signs of repainting or restoration. Examine areas where an accessory joins the body and where a delicate part may have been reattached.

Changes in gloss, texture or colour can suggest repair, although a photograph alone may not settle the question. Request close-up images where needed.

Fine crazing should also be disclosed. It differs from a structural crack, but its extent and visibility may affect a collector’s preference.

Surface Marks and Restoration

Light marks on the underside can result from display and handling. These should be described separately from chips or cracks.

A restored figure may still be attractive, particularly if the model is scarce, but repairs should be disclosed. Price it against restored examples rather than assuming it has the same value as an undamaged piece.

Good photographs and an accurate condition description help buyers make informed decisions.

Building and Caring for a Collection

Start with figures you enjoy. Learn their names, numbers and markings, and keep a record of each purchase.

Useful records include photographs, dimensions, condition notes, purchase date, price and any supporting certificate or provenance.

Display figurines on stable shelves with enough space to prevent contact. Lift them by supporting the main body and base, never by a delicate hand, bonnet or accessory.

Dust gently with a soft brush. Avoid soaking cracked or restored pieces, and seek specialist advice before attempting stain removal or repair.

Royal Doulton figurines offer many rewarding collecting paths—from an affordable decorative figure to a carefully researched collection of scarce models. Understanding the markings and examining condition closely makes each acquisition more meaningful.

About TMC Emporium

TMC Emporium is part of The McCorry Collection, offering selected vintage, antique and contemporary pieces for collectors and the home.
