Who Was Brownie Downing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viola Edith Downing was born at Manly, Sydney, on 9 May 1924. She became known professionally and personally as Brownie Downing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Downing developed her career as an artist and illustrator during the mid-20th century. Children became the central subject of her work, ranging from quiet portraits and family scenes to ballet dancers, schoolchildren and children observed during her travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her four children, Charles, Tim, Chele and Beau, appeared in or inspired many of her personal paintings and illustrations. Her son Tim helped inspire the central character in her first children\u2019s book, while her daughter Chele inspired another of its characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Downing travelled extensively and lived in several countries during her life. Her international experiences provided subjects for paintings and drawings of children in France, Spain, Ireland, Mexico, Jamaica and other locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
