For collectors, each piece can offer a connection with its maker, local industry and Australia’s artistic history.

Identification involves more than recognising a signature. Form, clay, glaze, construction, labels and documented examples all help establish what an object is and where it belongs.

A brief history of Australian pottery

Commercial potteries supplied everyday objects such as storage jars, bottles, kitchenware and garden pots. Decorative art pottery and individual ceramic practices developed alongside these industries.

During the twentieth century, studio pottery became an important part of Australian artistic life. Makers explored wheel-thrown and hand-built forms, expressive decoration and experimental glazes. International influences combined with local subjects, materials and workshop traditions.

Studio pottery is generally made by an individual potter or small workshop. Commercial pottery is usually produced on a larger scale, although the distinction can overlap: studio potters also made repeated ranges of functional wares.

Makers and pottery traditions

Australian ceramics include commercial names such as Wembley Ware and Bendigo Pottery, alongside studio potters including Merric Boyd, Klytie Pate, Reg Preston, Milton Moon and Carl McConnell.

Remued, made by Premier Pottery Preston, is another familiar collecting area. These names represent different approaches and periods; identifying the particular maker or workshop is more useful than relying on a broad “Australian pottery” label.

The illustrated Klytie Pate coffee pot offers one example of the sculptural forms and distinctive glazed surfaces found in Australian studio ceramics.

Marks, signatures and identification

Begin with the underside. Look for incised names, impressed seals, stamped marks, model numbers and surviving labels. Photograph the complete object and base clearly, including faint inscriptions.

Consider the evidence together:

Marks: Compare the lettering, seal or stamp with reliably documented examples. Makers sometimes changed marks or left pieces unsigned.

Clay and construction: Examine the unglazed foot, clay colour, throwing rings, mould seams and handle attachments.

Form and decoration: Compare proportions, rims, feet, applied ornament and painted or incised details.

Glaze: Colour, texture and firing effects can support identification, but rarely establish the maker alone.

Labels and numbers: Preserve original labels. A number may identify a shape, size or series rather than a date.

An unmarked pot is not automatically unattributable, but uncertainty should remain clear. Similar initials or glaze colours alone are insufficient evidence.

Condition and collecting

Examine the rim, foot, handles and raised decoration for chips, cracks or repairs. Distinguish fine glaze crazing and firing characteristics from structural damage.

Fine crazing does not by itself prove age or authenticity, and its absence does not establish restoration. Any suspected repair should be considered alongside differences in surface, colour and construction.

Collectors weigh condition against the object’s artistic quality, rarity and historical interest. Preserve photographs, measurements, purchase records and labels so that useful information stays with the piece.

What influences value?

Maker, attribution, form, glaze, condition, provenance and collector demand all influence value. An unusual or well-documented work may attract greater interest than a more common example, but age alone does not make pottery valuable.

Compare genuinely similar pieces and distinguish advertised prices from completed sales. Auction hammer prices may also exclude buyer’s premiums and other charges.

Building a collection

Choose objects that reward attention: a balanced form, expressive glaze, unusual decoration or a meaningful connection with a maker or place.

Some collectors specialise in one pottery; others bring together different makers to explore Australian design and social history. Both approaches benefit from careful research and good records.

Browse more Australian Pottery & Ceramics available from TMC Emporium.

Further Reading

NGV — Thrown: Studio Ceramics from the Kenneth Hood Bequest.

An introduction to Australian pottery and ceramics, covering studio and commercial makers, marks, signatures, glazes and collecting.
