Our Royal Doulton collection continues to grow, with every piece individually researched, carefully inspected and accurately described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The story begins in 1815<\/strong>, when John Doulton<\/strong> established a pottery at Vauxhall Walk, Lambeth, London, in partnership with Martha Jones and John Watts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pottery initially specialised in practical salt-glazed stoneware, bottles and drainage pipes during a period of rapid urban growth. These products helped improve sanitation across Britain and laid the financial foundations for what would become one of the country’s greatest ceramic manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As the nineteenth century progressed, Doulton expanded into increasingly decorative wares. Under the leadership of Henry Doulton<\/strong>, the company embraced both technical innovation and artistic design, earning an international reputation for quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 1901<\/strong>, King Edward VII granted the company permission to use the title Royal Doulton<\/strong>, recognising its outstanding reputation and its supply of ceramics to the Royal Household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of Royal Doulton’s greatest strengths was its willingness to collaborate with talented artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the late Victorian period, the Lambeth Art Studio became famous for encouraging independent decorators and modellers to create distinctive stoneware decorated by hand. Many of these artists signed their work, making Lambeth stoneware highly sought after today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This artistic culture established a tradition that continued throughout Royal Doulton’s history, combining industrial excellence with individual craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Few individuals influenced Royal Doulton more than Charles Noke (1858\u20131941)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Joining Doulton in the late nineteenth century, Noke became one of the company’s most celebrated modellers, eventually serving as Art Director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He believed ceramics should tell stories rather than simply decorate a room.
